WHO Issues Grave Warning on Antibiotic Resistance- What We Can Do
The iThrive
Our vision is to create healthier, happier, lifestyle-disease free communities across the world every single day.
The WHO issued a warning on 23rd November that antimicrobial resistance, a rapidly evolving problem could lead to 10 million deaths by 2050:
What is antibiotic resistance?
Antibiotic resistance is the phenomenon of an antibiotic becoming effective in working to kill pathogens(s) owing to the pathogen(s) developing resistance to the antibiotic. It is caused by the overuse and abuse of antibiotics.
Antibiotic resistance is not a new problem. Scientists have been sounding the alarm for over a decade. The idea to include the 10 million deaths by 2050 was a good move by the WHO since it has led to significant alarm in the public with many publications covering the story.
What can we do about it?
The first and foremost step is to address the root cause which is the extensive overuse of antibiotics. While even the extent of usage legally via doctor’s prescriptions is debated, the bigger problem is the extent of off-prescription usage. WHO’s survey reveals that off-prescription overuse of antibiotics for cold, sore throat and flu-like symptoms is rampant, being as high as 40 percent in some countries.?
While the above is well-known, what is not well-known is that we don’t even need pharmaceutical-grade chemical antibiotics in the vast majority of cases. Antimicrobial herbs are not only at par with chemical antibiotics but multiple studies comparing pharma antibiotics with herbal antimicrobials have found the latter to be more efficacious. Antibiotic resistance to pharma antibiotics is estimated to be a contributing factor to this.? Such as in the case of standard antibiotics used for H. pylori which are almost completely ineffective today- and natural alternatives like Berberine and Mastic gum are far more effective. Antimicrobial resistance is not a major issue with herbal antimicrobials as far as we know today.
“Antibiotic resistance is becoming significantly prominent and urgent in clinical practice with the increasing and wide application of antibacterial drugs…Traditional Chinese Medicine herbs and their effective constituents exhibit potential blockage ability on antibiotic-resistant bacteria, providing novel therapeutic ideas for reversing antibiotic resistance.”

“Bacterial resistance to antibiotics poses a high level of danger worldwide. Bacterial resistance mechanisms are spreading globally, impeding our ability to treat common infectious diseases. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics accelerate microbial resistance to antibiotics…the demand for herbal medicines has recently increased to co-treat microbes that are resistant to antibiotics.”
Pharma Antibiotics Nuke Your Gut
The bigger problem with pharma antibiotics at an individual health level is that they completely nuke the delicate microbial balance of the body’s internal microbiome. The effect of natural herbs in comparison is much more targeted, affecting pathogenic strains only. For this reason, natural antimicrobials are the preferred choice of functional medicine and other holistic health practitioners.?
