Why does history state we put a man on the moon before we put wheels on luggage?
The story of the Portable Porter Company starts in the 1940s post Second World War. 1948 was a particularly positive year in British history, as immigration began and the NHS was formed, India forged independence, the world began writing itself of its past. Britain felt prosperity for the first time in a long time. Travel in particular was going through an evolution as Boeing produced 56 Stratocruisers between 1947 to 1950. The golden era of travel was upon us, but still, luggage was not officially on wheels.
Herbert Mingo served during the Second World War as an aircraft engineer. During this period his side hustle was to perform as an opera singer which involved regular commuter journeys by train from London to Scotland. It was on these trips that he began to observe the work of the Railway Porters who were employed during the 50s to assist passengers at railway stations by handling the loading and distribution of luggage.?
Mingo observed the Porters continuous struggle with large trunks and cases. Using his engineering experience from the war, he took his idea to the workshop. The result was a device consisting of a metal bracket, two wheels and a strong textile/leather strap.?
The Portable Porter was revolutionary for its time, sparking interest with politicians, the BBC and was also sold in Harrods, John Lewis, Selfridges, and every major retailer from London to Scotland. Mingo had successfully put the first wheels on luggage and the Portable Porter Company became a reputable name for wheeled luggage. The patents were sold in 1970 to MacArthur Inc, known now as the Indian Mass manufacturing company.
Mingo’s legacy was left in an attic for 70 years until the pandemic struck in 2020. As the world stood still, a spontaneous conversation amongst our family began uncovering the story of the Portable Porter Co.? This is a great moment to introduce myself, my name is Joshua Cripps I am Herbert Mingo’s grandson. Sadly Herbert passed away the year I was born in 1992. As this story has unravelled,? I was given the archives which includes Herberts Diary.? This was an opportunity to understand who my grandfather was and put myself in his shoes. Many conversations between my Mother and my Aunt have encouraged me to bring his legacy to life. As we outlined the story, we then began our long journey to develop the perfect carry on suitcase.?

The design of the case drew influence from a 1950’s trunk, combining sustainable materials and methods. This includes reused and recycled polycarbonate extract (30% of the shell is made of recycled material). The inner lining is made from a recycled fabric called RPET, which recycles 15 water bottles per unit. Every aspect of the product has been designed with thought and legacy at its core.
The mission from day one was to pay homage to Herbert’s Legacy, embracing the original handwritten logos and slogans. Drafting in a talented Argentinian designer called Sofia Noceti who brought the rebrand to life. Our aim is to retell Herbert’s legacy and design, and build beautifully crafted travel products for the considerate traveller. As we grow we will incorporate as many sustainable techniques and materials into our products.
