Who influences you?
Who do you know who has made you a better human being or a better leader? Who do you know who’s a great coach? And I don’t just mean your favorite sport. And I’m not bringing this up just because it’s football season. Although – YES – I am SUPER excited for the pigskin to start flying, I won’t pretend I’m not.
As a leader, maybe you also rely on a coach for support, direction and motivation. Because, hey Coach, you can’t do it alone. I can’t either. I’ve become the coach I am today because of some other pretty amazing people.
The first was my dad. He capitalized on many a teaching moment, like when my first car, a 1977 Honda Civic, needed a tune up. I gave Dad the big puppy eyes while I asked him to tune it up for me. “Okay, Leslie,” he said, “Make a list: spark plugs, rotor and rotor cap, etc..” I wrote it all down carefully. “Now go down to the auto parts store and buy it.” I couldn’t wait for Dad to put all this stuff in place, change the oil for me, all that. When I presented him with the bag of goods, he shook his head. “No, Leslie, YOU’RE going to do this.”
Excuse me, what? He walked me through the process as I did the tune up and oil change, explained why it’s done just so and made sure I had a fully-functioning vehicle when it was done. Well, cars don’t need tune ups any more but I’ve changed my own oil ever since. And you know what Dad’s auto maintenance coaching really gave me? Confidence. Independence. Skill. And dare I say it, the swagger to walk in to any mechanic’s shop and not feel entirely at their mercy.
Who’s influenced and coached you? Someone who gave you a skill, a valuable process, a light bulb moment?
Coach Vince Lombardi said “Leaders aren’t born, they are made.” What coaches have you met who made you who you are today?
Always good hanging out,
