Who I learn the most from
Warning: this post is definitely not for everyone. And a good percentage of you will roll your eyes.
But when I think of who I have learned things from- for me- I think I have learned the most from my kids.
Before I had kids I was more judgmental of people and situations. I assumed a lot of things and lacked patience.
While I still have a distance to travel in all of these areas, having kids has certainly made a massive impact on me.
One area this shows up in is asking questions. Earlier today I saw my 4 year old with a small dixie cup and - asked her what she was doing with it.
Nearly 10 minutes later, with the use of scissors, markers, crayons and everything else in our craft cabinet she proudly called me over and showed me how she had made an outdoor shower for her small stuffed mouse.
And it looked awesome.
And here’s the thing: I have 100s of stories like this, and if you have kids my assumption is that you do too.
They just see things differently. One of their gifts is that they typically don’t see things as they are - they see things for what they could be.
And, whenever I ask them questions about what they are thinking or what they are making - whenever my questions come from a place of curiosity - I am always blown away by what they see, what they are thinking and what they are making.
I have carried this life lesson forward into my life and have found myself genuinely connecting with people I may not have in the past, building better relationships (personal and professional) - and as a result I can confidently say I am a happier person because of it.
