Who is the Henry Ford of robotics?

Have humanoid robots been the spark that opens our eyes to the automobile comparison?

Right now the roll out of robotics has some strong alignment with the early history of the roll out of the automobile, and primarily the commercial automobile, not the consumer automobile.

Does anyone have a graph or paper that compares and contrasts the growth in commercial market for both automobiles and robots? I’ve been exploring the figures. In fact, the post WW2 era see an increase in the rate of commercial automobile ownership contrasted with consumer vehicles and I think there are strong parallels with the recent pandemic/supply chain restraint period and the current focus in robotics on … how do we make robots!

This period is also when the percentage of people owning both cars and houses separated. After 1945-1950, car ownership became more likely for most Americans than house ownership. There are more car owners now (92%) vs house owners (65%) - statistics updated for 2024.

We’re in an era when lack of robots does not equal lack of interest OR even of investment. It’s a resource capacity restraint, and as it crumbles we’ll see rapid growth of some robotics companies - particularly humanoid robotics companies.

Another always interesting topic is the current scale and speed of robot/ai learning, and what impact that will have on robotics? (Also it’s of how various communities are (un)able to make use of different asset layers.)

ICRA was pretty overwhelming and I’m behind with newsletters … maybe there’ll be a few in a row this week.

Look up Beaumont, Texas. J&J Manufacturing started building automated rubber bale wrappers in the 1950s. There is quite alot innovations in Robotics and Automation to come from Beaumont, Texas thanks to the funding of projects by the petrochemical industry there.
