Who Hates Cover Letters For Your Job Search (ATSs do, how about you)?

If you hate cover letters, you're in luck.

That's because Applicant Tracking Systems (resume databases employers use to automate resume screening), also hate cover letters.

ATSs don't keyword search cover letters ... Instead, Applicant Tracking Systems ignore them, for almost all employers.

Job seekers will often ask during my webinar Q&A questions like: "What if my cover letter is in a T-format, what if I describe why I've changed jobs frequently in my cover letter, or what if my cover letter addresses transferrable skills?".

I answer that it's more effective to put that information into your resume, since your resume is keyword searched, while your cover letter is ignored.

This is why recruiters agree and why there's a common saying among recruiters ... "If it's not on your resume, it doesn't exist".

But some employers require or request cover letters for online applications, even though ATSs aren't screening them - It's because IT departments set up application processes once, and it one person in the company wants cover letters, the IT department requires them for all. This is more efficient for the employer, while it's a complete waste of your time. Worse, the overwhelming majority of employers say that cover letters cause you to lose opportunities, even when required.
