Who is going to take responsibily for your Career?

Which IT Career option to choose:

  • Out of so many options available for an IT career. 100 of the main programs/courses available but the real pain area is to making a decision which option is best for him/her, kind of next to impossible for any graduates to choose from without proper guidance.
  • Taking help from the non-competent person (Friends/Family) who never works in the core IT domain but Graduates are seeking help from them unknowingly falling into trouble and suffering related to their career. The same applies to non-IT domains too.

Graduates are mostly seeking help from teachers/professors but with due respect to them, It's very hard for them to guide those graduates reason, most of them never worked in the IT industry so how we can expect them to give proper guidance to the needy graduates?

Lack of proper skill/domain knowledge:

  • Most graduates are very easy going and they are just focusing on passing the papers. They are not in a position to gain little extra knowledge about any of the top upcoming technology. In the last 3-4 months I have interacted with hundreds of graduates and asked one common question saying, Please speak for 3-4 minutes about any new/upcoming or your favorite domain but sadly hardly any graduates speak on this. Question is, To whom to blame? Only to our education system or Graduates have to take ownership.
  • If you will ask a simple question to you as a graduate i.e. Why I am learning this? What exact problem I will solve with this new topic I have learned? Maybe just 5 to 6 case studies and speak about those while the interview session but most of you as graduates not even ready for that. Again to whom to blame?

The educational institution/college, neither gives them skills that are needed for employment nor any domain knowledge required in real project work in MNCs.

Why do some Graduates succeed and others fail?

I am not counting those who are losing the golden opportunity due to their carelessness but many graduates are working very hard, they invested lakhs of rupees too but failed to achieve the desired outcome. Why? They are lacking guidance, proper skills, and domain knowledge.

Apart from proper skill & guidance, Graduates are lacking other vital skill which is needed by all corporates. Any person who is interviewing a fresh graduate is analyzing you based on these parameters:

  • Is this person prepared to learn? Has she/he made any extra effort to do something more than what was told to do?
  • Will she/he volunteer to walk that extra mile?
  • Does she/he have a little more knowledge than his textbooks?
  • Does she/he know what is happening around her?
  • Does she/he have an attitude to learn and a positive outlook toward life?

My take is yet to come and that is If you will able to find only one thing as a graduate you will able to get going with your career in just 6 months!!! YES JUST IN 6 MONTHS. But what? Here we go:

Find your Mentor who has 12 plus years of experience on related area

When there is no mentor to guide these graduates they end up making wrong decisions, often doing nothing on their own and completely wasting their 3 to 4 years. These are lakhs of youngsters aged between 21 and 26 bubbling with energy, who are unable to find a direction. The majority of parents have no clue as to how to guide them. This not only happens in small or tier 2/3 towns but also metros.
