Who doesn't love a good canvas?
Martin Grant
Facilitator, navigator, sensemaker, and designer helping organisations and sectors adapt.
As my great friend and colleague Peter Harrison noted last night over a beer, it's been amazing where my curiosity for system thinking and the transition of systems that started nearly a decade ago has led me and others.
I've lost count of the articles and books I've read, but I do believe I've stood in front of over 300 people in various masterclasses sharing my journey, learnings and tools. The number of organisations that have shared their thinking that I have tapped into is also large, and I'm hugely indebted to all of them. But, I think my greatest benefactor for thinking and resources has been Systems Innovation .
I set out to democratise this way of being and doing because the more of us that can act this way and can engage the powers that be to support us, the more chance we have of making a difference in this world for the short time we are here.
To this end, I'm sharing my latest prototype creation. The full set of System Transition Canvases are now here for download.
It would take quite a few beers - which I'm always happy to do anytime, and more than I care to write or you to read to explain all the logic behind them. Suffice to say (in the spirit of 'chainsaw'), for most of us, our minds can't handle grasping the complexity of a situation. I know this for a fact because I've seen the looks on people's faces when I've asked them to comprehend a complex system and given them a blank piece of paper. So in the spirit of the great Strategizer canvases, let's break it down into a series of steps and questions:

If you know holistic thinking versus reductionist thinking, you may call out a risk in the plan. Hence, the main 'Step 2: See the System' canvas works best printed as an A0 so you can always step back and see the whole while grappling with the parts.
As I said, these are designed to be printed and worked on by a team around a table with small square post-its. They can also be uploaded onto Mural/Miro for virtual sessions.
These are a prototype. I've deployed them in a live situation and feel they have potential. So, in the spirit of prototyping, message me if any of the questions on the canvases trip you up.
Once I put up the second set, I'll tee up an online walk-through of the whole lot.
Enjoy. I'm always up for a beer to bend your ear more about these.

Facilitating collaboration for change
2 年Martin Grant this is a gift - been looking for a way to unpack how I see the system I'm playing in. Going to use this to unpack my own thoughts, and use that to help me show and tell people what I see. Will let you know how it goes!
Solving complex challenges to make our communities more compassionate, supportive and healthy places to live
