Who does a therapist go to for therapy?

Over the years several clients have asked me this question and I think its a great question to ask.?

As a therapist I am certainly not immune from life's challenges and so it is really important that I nurture and protect my own mental health in order to support others.

For years I have done this in a variety of ways.

1. My husband (Tom Weaver) is also a therapist and so he is always my first point of call in any challenge. He holds lots of therapy qualifications and in my opinion is one of the best there is. He gives practical, clear advice and support which has helped me more times than I can count. (You can also have him as your therapist, just book a FREE 30 min chat chat with him)

2. I also turn to a fellow professional and talented psychologist. When I need to process things in a more neutral environment, I have a great friend and colleague who offers me the space and expertise to do that. I go to him frequently (and him to me) as a space which offers non judgement, experience and compassion.

3. An independent. When I have experienced some of life's really big challenges I have opted to go to someone totally independent to help me through it. This gives me the space to be more selfish in my approach, making the sessions entirely about me.

Why is this important?

I know its important to practice what I preach and accept that I always have "stuff" to work on. I therefore ensure I have trusted sources who can do this with me and for me. Therapy does not always need to be formalised but it does need to feel safe, non judgemental and helpful, having at least one person who can do this for you is so important.

Finally, if your therapist is not prioritising their own mental health and wellbeing, it's unlikely they will be able to support you fully.
