Each year, millions of hectares of various biomes worldwide are consumed by uncontrolled flames, emitting vast amounts of greenhouse gases and threatening global biodiversity. Forest fires, while comprising only 5% of the land burned, are responsible for over 80% of associated greenhouse gas emissions.?

With climate change and land use shifts exacerbating the frequency and intensity of these fires, projections suggest a potential increase of up to 50% in extreme fire incidents by the end of this century. This phenomenon not only threatens the health of our ecosystems but also hinders advancements towards achieving sustainable development goals and meeting the targets set by the Paris Agreement on climate change.?

Addressing this mounting crisis requires integrated approaches to forest fire management, encompassing not just suppression but also prevention, risk mitigation, and robust post-fire recovery plans. The "5R" strategy — review and analysis, risk reduction, rapid response, and recovery — serves as an effective framework in this regard.?

Historically, fire has been a land management tool used for millennia by various cultures to enhance hunting, agriculture, and grazing conditions. Despite our modern landscape, we retain the knowledge and techniques necessary to mitigate the risks of uncontrolled fires.?

At this point, regulations such as EUDR, European Union Deforestation Regulation, plays a crucial role. Companies must conduct thorough due diligence in their supply chains to ensure that their products are not linked to recent deforestation, forest degradation, or violations of local environmental and social laws. This represents a further step towards protecting the land, not just from deforestation by fire.?

Investing significant political and financial resources in fire prevention, preparedness, and recovery will not only protect our natural landscapes but also promote a more resilient future in the face of climate change. In doing so, we can restore hope for an environment where green forests and blue skies can coexist in harmony with our global communities.?
