Have you ever worked around someone who made you feel smarter & more capable?
They are multipliers.
Have you ever worked around who made you question your own intelligence?
They are diminishers.
Let me elaborate by sharing a story.
Larry Galwix, was the coach of Highland High school Rugby Team for 35 years. During these years the team won 19 US National championships. The Rugby club sustained a record of 410 wins to ten losses which might make him
the most winning coach, perhaps, on the planet.
Highland School’s Rugby Team player, John mentions, in one practice, Coach Galwix said to him, ”John you are fast! You are a fast player that’s why we have got you in this position.”
Well, John had never seen himself as a fast player. But, in the next practice, he found himself running harder, and faster. And then in the next game, when they needed to speed, he somehow found it and then he said, he became the fastest player.
Multipliers use their intelligence to amplify the talent and capabilities of people around them. They help them unleash their hidden potentials. Diminishers are smart executives but they shut down the smartness of others. They come with such a high cost that they waste talent and intellect that’s right in front of them.
Let us see ourselves in the mirror as a leader?
Who do you see? A Multiplier or a Diminisher.
