Who do you need to 'be'? in 2022 in order get to your goals?

Who do you need to 'be' in 2022 in order get to your goals?

This past February, my friend Julia Halpin sent me a recording that I have watched no less than 20 times.

Her company sponsored an interview with New York City broker Ryan Serhant. He just released a new book called "Big Money Energy" and Tiki Barber was hosting the conversation about it. I follow Serhant on Youtube, so I was clued in to the fact that yes, he sells high end real estate in Manhattan, but his personal brand and messaging is about personal power.

I mentioned that I have listened to the interview 20 times. At the 50 minute mark of the video is the piece I have shared probably 20 more times. Serhant challenges the listeners to an exercise called "Future You." Imagine it's 10am, November 16th, 2023. Who are you sitting with? Is it your dream client? What are you wearing? What does your life look like? Write down the answers to these questions in excruciating detail.

Serhant concludes with this: That person you outlined on paper is the 'future you.' That person is now your boss. That's who you work for.

Who do you have to become, starting today, to realize all of it?

I'm thinking to November 2022. I've built a higher level mastermind with 8 women, culminating in a retreat at the Four Seasons in Marrekch. Each time I do this exercise, I get more clarity. Here is what I have learned.

  • I could learn some more grace. I've been on my own since I was 18 years old. I was a fantastic survivor. Scrappy. I was painfully direct. I didn't have the luxury of role models. But I do now. By 2022, if I wish to have a powerful mastermind with 8 high performing, highly connected women, I am adopting learn scripts and behaviors that convey more 'polish.'
  • I could do everything. But I shouldn't. Leadership is learning to delegate. I'm building a team for 2022. I continue to lay strategy, and empower others to do the tactical.
  • Building in more down time. As Dorie Clark recommends in her book "The Long Game," dedicate 20% of my time RIGHT NOW, to ideating around what that Mastermind will look like. I'm a fantastic doer. Based on this exercise yesterday at my dining room table-- a little less 'doing' is in order.

January, I host 2 mini retreats to kick off the mastermind. We are after the answer to the question 'Who do you need to be in 2022 in order to achieve your goals?'

One retreat is in New York. One in Paris. DM me at [email protected] if you want to be put on the list.
