3 first ones are the oldest or sick: they set the pace to the group.
They are followed by the 5 strongest and powerful wolves, the Beta wolves.
Then come the Gamma wolves.
Well behind, is the Alpha wolf: the leader of the pack. From his position, he checks the group, decides on directions and anticipates the threats.
The pack moves forward at the pace of the oldest under the command of the leader who inspires others to help one another and leaves nobody behind. If the pack was organized on the contrary, it would stretch, split...the weakest would be left behing and sacrificed in case of attack.
