Why is this important? Being aware of where you have the greatest impact will empower you to influence events that will help you increase your value at home, at work, and at the bank. Based on what you are trying to accomplish you will know the proper platform that will give you the most leverage in making your dreams a reality.
Each of us has a range of influence that affects others.
For some our range works best when we are reaching out to groups. I was invited to hear a friend of ours band play in a small venue in MD. The band had performed in venues with audiences of thousands of people; yet this venue they played in that night barely had 100 people in attendance. I remember pointing out to Lori that this band is bigger than this venue. It was as if their music shot right past the 100 people and fell on deaf ears of the thousands of people who were not in the audience that night. This group’s talent laid in reaching larger groups of people. Yet, others have a smaller range that works best being able to connect with individuals one-on-one.
You will have the greatest impact when you master operating within your scope of influence.
To thy own self be true….don’t jive yourself.
Even if you are best suited for individual connections, you can have an impact on thousands. Allow me to tell you a story I learned from my former boss, about just such a case.
Back before they had psychiatric hospitals, there was a young girl called, Little Annie, who was committed to an insane asylum. Because of her difficulties they locked Little Annie in a cage, in the cellar. There was one nurse who took special care with Little Annie. Every day the nurse would go down to the cellar and read to the little girl. Little Annie would never respond at all. One day, in an act of kindness the nurse left cookies outside her cage. The next day the nurse noticed the cookies were gone. Little Annie had eaten them.
Every day the nurse would leave cookies outside of the cage and eventually
Little Annie started to open up to the nurse. Years pasted and Little Annie had a remarkable recovery. The administrators of the insane asylum came to her and said, “Little Annie you are totally cured. Now that you are 18 years old, you are free to do anything you want to do. What is it that you will do with the rest of your life?” Little Annie replied, “Because of the kindness I was shown, I want to help other children who have problems like I had.”
Years later, Helen Keller was receiving the highest award possible by the Queen of England. The queen said, “Helen your story of defeat and triumph has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across the globe. Despite being born deaf and blind you have managed to do the impossible. What to you attribute to your success?” Helen Keller let it be known that if it weren’t for Miss Anne she wouldn’t be there today. Miss Anne was Little Annie. The story of Helen Keller is truly wonderful. But, the not so famous story of the nurse who helped someone, who helped someone else, who in turn affected the lives of hundreds of thousands of people…. Is the best story of all.
As you reflect on this week’s question and ask yourself: Who really listens to me individuals/groups? Begin to reflect on all those opportunities that are present in your life every day as you interact at home, at work and at the bank.
