Who are career consultants and can they actually help you?

Demands for the services of career consultants are increasing as people strive to learn how to manage their careers and monetize their experience.

Due to the large number of diverse professionals in this field, it is important to understand who to turn to in order to get the maximum benefit and protect yourself from misinformation.

Let's break it down together!

The first category of specialists includes HR managers and recruiters who work both within companies (in-house) and provide services externally with deep expertise in one or several industries they work in.

When should you approach such professionals? When you are certain about what you want to do and where to work, but need advice to improve your CV or insights on interview techniques.

The second category is coaches who provide career and personal development consulting. These are individuals with a business or psychological background, possessing knowledge of specific techniques and helping you understand your true aspirations and set goals in your career development.

When should you approach such professionals? If you have some experience but feel lost, are searching for your true self and want to understand "who am I?" or "what do I want?". When you have various activities and need to pause to "think things over". Coaches can push and inspire you to unlock your potential, set goals, and work through psychological barriers and complexes.

Since verifying a coach's experience is difficult, there's a risk of encountering an unprofessional individual. It's like playing roulette, where you might face Steve Jobs or a person, who worked at the market and after a three-month course calls himself a "business coach".

The possibility of finding a truly professional individual in this category exists, and it's quite high, you just need to be attentive and cautious.

The third category, to which I belong, is headhunters, entrepreneurs with deep industry experience from startups to large corporations, knowledge of various geographical markets, techniques and tools for conflict resolution, employer and candidate behavior analysis, building communications with partners, managers, and investors, crisis management skills, which combined with quantitative experience provide a 3D view of the industry.

When should you turn to the third group of people? If you need a comprehensive analysis of the market, business industry trends, assessment of your experience and skills and how they match existing offers, as well as understanding what and where it's worth investing (meaning your time and resources for learning).?

Additionally, such specialists can help set career goals with step-by-step guidance and practical recommendations from CV to receiving an offer.

Finally, if you want to start your own business, the third type of specialist will help you shift your mindset to a business-oriented one, learn negotiation techniques to attract investors and launch a business.

So, who should you turn to? Define your goals and choose the right consultant to succeed in your career or business.
