Who in Calif state government is in charge of nonprofits? And can I ask that person a question?
If you're a farmer, you probably know that farming is overseen by the California Department of Food & Agriculture. But if you work and/or volunteer at a nonprofit, you're less likely to be where in government your organization "belongs."
The answer is the Charities Division of the Department of Justice, also called the Attorney General's office, and Rob Bonta is the current Attorney General. The person in charge of the Charities Division is new: Elizabeth Kim. And you can ask her a question at the Annual Policy Symposium of the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits) on Wed, December 13, online.
Although Elizabeth isn't new to the Charities Division, she's newly stepping into her role as head of the division. There are many hot policy issues for her to look at, including problems with delinquent filings, donor-advised funds disclosures, reporting by online fundraising platforms (such as GoFundMe, PayPal), and raffles, in addition to the regular work of investigating fraud and misuse of funds in nonprofits.
After Elizabeth's keynote, I'll be moderating a discussion centered on questions raised by participants. So if you have a question for the state official in charge of nonprofits, this is the time to ask it!
