I am a Salesforce Integration and Data Management Architect. I am the one who makes sure that all the systems in your organization “talk” to each other and share the right information. I am like an air traffic controller to your data, ensuring that it flows smoothly and arrives where it is needed, free of crashes and disruptions.
To gain a deeper understanding of this role, I’m excited to share an interview with Kevin, a seasoned Salesforce architect with years of hands-on experience in the Salesforce ecosystem.
I’m Kevin, a Salesforce Technical Architect with over five years of experience in the Salesforce ecosystem. Prior to this role, I worked in client-facing and developer roles, giving me a holistic understanding of technical and business challenges. I’m passionate about solving complex problems and building transformative solutions.
Can you walk me through your process for designing an integration strategy between Salesforce and other enterprise systems?
Designing an integration strategy starts with understanding the business requirements and systems involved. I engage stakeholders early to identify key data flows, the existing system landscape and integrations, and non-functional (e.g. performance) requirements.
After gathering requirements, I assess whether each integration interface requires real-time synchronisation, batch processing or event-driven architecture, and I evaluate data volume, structure and potential system constraints to define the right integration architecture. This includes selecting the appropriate integration pattern (e.g., request-response, publish-subscribe, or data virtualisation) for each interface and the right integration capability to use for each scenario (REST API, Salesforce Connect, Apex Callouts, Bulk API, Platform Events, CDC, External Services, etc.).
I also consider the scalability, error handling and monitoring of the solution. The chosen approach must be consistent with both short-term project goals and long-term scalability. For example, I define mechanisms for retrying the integration and mechanisms for logging transactions and errors to facilitate debugging and ensure that the integration remains reliable.

Another important aspect of the solution is recommending the right integration landscape, components and technology (e.g. ETLs; ESBs, proxies, gateways, on-premises systems, etc.) that will be used. For complex integrations, especially those that require asynchronous integration of large volumes of data, middleware such as MuleSoft often plays a critical role by simplifying API orchestration, ensuring data transformation, and supporting scalability and reusability to connect multiple systems and data sources. For simpler scenarios, native Salesforce tools such as Salesforce Connect, Apex HTTP callouts, custom REST/SOAP APIs, or Platform Events may be sufficient. Project constraints and risks must be considered when making this decision.
Finally, rigorous testing (unit, integration and UAT) must be planned and executed throughout the release lifecycle to ensure that the integrated end-to-end processes work as expected.
Explain your approach to integrating Salesforce with other systems. How do you handle complex integrations involving real-time data?
When dealing with real-time data integration, I start by understanding the data requirements associated with data synchronisation: what data is being exchanged, how frequently, and in what direction. There are several integration patterns that can be considered for real-time data synchronisation.?
– The Request-Response pattern is ideal for integrating processes (business logic), but can also be used for real-time data integration. It’s used when the system sending the request needs to wait and act on the response from the requested system. This pattern relies on web services and APIs, especially RESTful APIs that are invoked through callouts. -The fire-and-forget pattern is ideal for handling near real-time updates without waiting for a response, which is most appropriate for data integrations, but could also be used for process integrations. Event-driven integrations using a pub-sub approach follow this pattern. Tools such as Change Data Capture (CDC) can be used to automatically track and record changes and push updates to external systems using platform events.
