Have you ever ...even for a minute thought about who you are?
Who am I?
Most would start by saying...
My name is Rita and I'm a software engineer/ teacher/ the list goes on.
But that is not who you are...your name is what helps with identifying you, while your profession is what you do.
Instead, the ultimate question of Who am I, represents your beliefs, your attributes and everything that works together to make you, you.
It goes beyond just the physical, but the emotional, social and spiritual self. It's a conscious awareness of your own thoughts and actions.
To develop your sense of self, you need to be self-aware.
Our self-concept starts from a very young age during childhood until early adulthood.
So are u doomed if you have passed that tender age and you are perhaps in your, 30s 40s or even 50s?
It's never too late. It's all lies in what you perceive. So can we re-shape our self-concept?
Even though it's easier to form your self-concept between the ages of 2-6 years old, being self-aware can help us tune it up.
With an understanding of ......
1. How we see ourselves now
2. Comparing of current self with
our ideal self.
3. Call for action- what we can do to move ourselves towards that direction.
There is indeed hope.
As Stephen Seade, mentioned in his latest video on content strategy, it's about putting the end in mind.
Some might find it morbid, but a good self-reflective practice is imagining how you would like to be remembered once you are gone.
In a eulogy, the individual is only given a limited time, to sum up your entire being. Fond memories ? and the perception of others on who you really were in that 5 min.
So the question is...
How will you be remembered at the end of the day;
...for being the one that made the bank?
....for being someone that was always there for them?
.....for being the one that truly cared?
.....for being the one that always gives back?
Or will your significant other, family member or colleague, struggle to find the words to describe who you were to them.
End of the day, your self-concept will not only be crucial while you are on this journey on earth but to the many years later as you are remembered and as you move on to your next adventure ??
Next up....the masks that we wear on our journey of self-concept (Who I am!).
