WhitWoCoPS #9: Google is being notorious. Again.
February has been quite an eventful month for me. I got married two weeks back to my childhood best friend, packed my bags and shifted to Bangalore and just two days back got the pox. Well, it seems like we got to live the marriage vow ‘in sickness and in health’ quite early in our journey.?
As for the publisher ecosystem, Google has made the news yet again. News mostly for being notorious that is. You are all well aware of the EU-wide investigation into Google’s digital advertising business that opened up last year. Amid this turmoil, The European Publishers Council, which includes members such as CEOs of News UK, Condé Nast, New York Times, filed an antitrust complaint against Google with the EU Commission for fiddling around with publishers in the ad tech ecosystem. Google is yet again in the spotlight for its alleged anti-competitive ad practices. You can read more about it here and in this newsletter.
Remember Google’s acquisition of the online ad platform DoubleClick in 2008? It has come to light that Google favors its own ad technology over competing providers. Oh! Here is an interesting fact - Google has been fined €8.23 billion - $9.37 billion for its anti-competitive practices in Europe since 2018. My oh my!?

With the talks of Web 3.0, many publishers have started experimenting with NFTs. Many call Web 3.0 ‘the next iteration of the evolution of the web’ where data will be interconnected in a decentralized way.??
Web 3.0 will make it possible to process information smartly by making use of machine learning, big data and so on. Tim Berners- Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, had discussed this way ahead in time and called it semantic web.?
Brett Rakestraw, director of strategy for creative branding firm Elevation said that web 3.0 is going to be a hurricane of a change -?
