Judge Thomas Trent Lewis (Ret.) at Signature Resolution
The Los Angeles Superior Court dedicated the opening of the Whittier Family Law Court on May 11, 2018. Presiding Judge Daniel J. Buckley served as master of ceremonies for the occasion. The opening of the court was attended by numerous local and statewide dignitaries including Majority Leader, Ian Calderon, California State Assembly, District 57, County Supervisor Janice Hahn, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Fourth District, and Councilman Josue Alvarado, City of Whittier. The Whittier Family Law Court is staffed by four family law general jurisdiction departments and one long cause family law trial department for trials or hearings of three days or longer. Not surprisingly, the capable leadership staff of court operations labored to make this dream a reality. The facility was repurposed from a predominately criminal court venue into a family friendly court with a spacious children's waiting room, substantial self help center, and several offices for the family court services counselors as they meet with parents in an effort to amicably resolve custody disputes. The self-help center will provide assistance of for all aspects of family law from divorce, parentage actions, and applications for orders for protection as a result of domestic violence. By opening the Whittier Family Law Court, the Los Angeles Superior Court recognizes the importance of helping families resolve their disputes fairly and efficiently. The court will commence operations on May 24, 2018; and the family law operations of the Norwalk branch of the court will transfer to this repurposed, well furnished, adequately staffed, and redesigned family law court. The opening of the Whittier Family Law Court is emblematic of the Los Angeles Superior Court's commitment to meeting the needs of families and children in this vital area of family law practice.
