John and Delores Eads have been working in the most impoverished, most violent census tract in Alabama for the last 17 years. In that time, they have buried over 30 members of their community. So when we first visited their street ministry, the Light of the Village, I kept wondering "why"? Not "who"?, or "what color are they".
When one is in the thick of the battle for doing good, you get a laser focus on what is important right here and now. You roll up your sleeves, get super smart quick, and get to work. And what you don't really need is someone from the sidelines questioning your motivations.
"Get outta the suite, and on the street"
The story of Light of the Village is going to be one of the most powerful episodes for our upcoming PBS TV show, The Good Road. It will take you through the full range of emotions, and will haunt your thoughts for a long time.
In this podcast episode of Philanthropology, we explore the thorny question of race, by digging into the question of the "White Savior Complex".
Look out for our show on your local PBS station starting in April, 2020 as we explore the messy business of doing good, on The Good Road.
