White Noise Session

White Noise Session

EOS promotes clarity breaks, and in the book Limitless, Jim Kwik talks about taking a 30-minute "No Technology" break in one of his Kwik Start exercises.

I kind of combined the two ideas and started (very recently) doing a White Noise Session. This is a half-hour NO TECHNOLOGY session, although you can use Alexa or Siri to set timers.

I use this to help be be more creative, solve problems, or work on strategy. The only rule is, No Technology. One of the four digital villains is Digital Distraction, which is one we really want to defeat during this exercise.

The 1/2 Hour White Noise Session Recipe

  1. Free Writing (2 Minutes): For two minutes, write down whatever comes to your mind. You will likely already start this exercise with some idea of what you are going to do, but try to free your brain as much as possible and let whatever is deep in there boil to the surface.
  2. Set Intention (3 Minutes): Take a look at what you just wrote. Think of where you are right now. With your brain writing, is there a problem that needs solving? Is there a story to tell? Identify your intentions over the next 20 minutes regarding your free writing exercise. How do you want to develop it?
  3. Dive in (25 Minutes): For the next 25 minutes let your brain tackle your intention. Don't use any devices. If there is something you feel you need to look up or research, write it down and do it later. For now, rely on your own judgments and critical thinking.
  4. Conclude (5 Minutes): For the final 5 minutes, review everything you did. Makes notes about any strong takeaways, questions that need to be answered, and wisdom gleaned.

To be fair, I just started doing this, but it's been working really well for me. If you are looking for some brain training, I recommend reading Jim Kwik's Limitless.

If you wonder why I called it a White Noise Session, it is because white noise will block background noises that help your brain focus. Leaving your tech turned off and out of this process will help you do the same.

Feel free to play white noise during this exercise!

If you do, let me know if you like it.
