A Whisky Pioneer Is Born
Thrilled to be part of Vietnam’s (and South East Asia’s) first whisky distillery - V? D? Di.
To pioneer a new industry is no easy feat. More so in a new environment like Vietnam, not known for crafting whisky. This challenge reminds me of my family’s own wine journey in Virginia, back when a wine industry did not exist. Today, after four decades, Virginia wine enjoys well deserved international recognition. That same underdog story is a powerful one for Vietnamese whisky.
Whisky blends and single malts are traditionally associated with aging in colder climates, taking some 8 - 18 ++ years. By contrast, Vietnam’s warm humid climate accelerates whisky aging. It will be ready to drink in 3 years.
Competing with established brands is challenging for any start-up. V? D? Di has already found success despite all odds by winning a "Masters" medal for their single malt, new make pale ale whisky and a "Gold", for their new make single malt, brown ale whisky. Two of the highest prizes at the Whisky Masters 2024 London competition. Important recognition at a critical time.
The people behind this company are energetic crafty Hanoians and expatriates. Jacks of all trades, including poets. V? D? Di in Vietnamese means to return, in order, to go. “(because) sometimes you have to come back, to be able to know how to leave”. If this has you wondering, then it is already working…
Besides whisky, V? D? Di is crafting Gin, Rum, Triple Sec and Crème de Cacao spirits among others.? Whisky, however, remains the heart and soul of the operation. Can’t wait to taste what this awesome team creates next.
Cheers!
