The whimsy of problem solving

The whimsy of problem solving

What comes to mind when you hear the word “whimsy” or whimsical?

Few, if any of us, first go to a business setting or problem solving. Whimsy is the stuff of fairy tales, children’s books, unbelievable imaginations.

In his work on paradigms and redefining problems, Joel Barker asks a very intriguing question, “What is impossible to do in your business today, but if it could be done would fundamentally change it for the better?”

How far are you willing to extend your imagination to address problems that your customers are experiencing today – and only a far-fetched, outrageous solution seems to be the answer?

Rarely will the fairy tale solution be THE solution, but what if as you walk back from whimsy, a novel idea is formed? What if instead of “impossible” you move to “potential”? What if you move from “never” to “maybe” because of some Dr Seuss turn of phrase that sparks creativity?

If we insist on addressing today’s problems with yesterday’s thinking, we will never create tomorrow’s solutions. Sometimes we need a touch of the whimsical to spark a solution.

Try whimsy!
