Which works better: Negativity or Positivity?

Which works better: Negativity or Positivity?

Put 'em together, and you've got a winning combination!

Welcome to The Gist with Jyll, your monthly dose of Google Ads expertise. I'll be sharing my top posts with you from LinkedIn and other platforms, with added perspective and reflection to help YOU get better results with Google Ads.

This LinkedIn exclusive newsletter will interest you if:

  • you work with Google Ads for a living, and prefer to receive your news with analysis and insights
  • you're a current or aspiring content creator, and want a "peek under the hood" at how that works

Let's get into it.

Your favourite Google Ads LinkedIn posts this month were...

  1. a dig at the (un)usability of the new Google Ads interface: I'll never forgive Google for making me click "Campaigns, Campaigns, Campaigns"
  2. a laugh at the obvious error in my Performance Max campaign's insights: I'm pretty sure that more than 4.4% of US traffic comes from Male users
  3. a story about how to stop "optimizing into a hole": when we only show ads when people are searching for exactly what we offer, we don't show many ads because not many people are searching for exactly what we offer

Why did these posts get so much attention?

The first two had that perfect negativity / positivity mix. Both of them are poking fun at Google, and who doesn't love that?! Easy punching bag, the ol' Goog.

But importantly, I'm not exclaiming that Google is evil or bad or malicious or doing anything that causes me genuine concern. These are surface-level, relatable "ha ha" moments, and in framing them that way, it keeps the positivity there, which is essential for my communication style and ethos.

If your personal brand is all about crapping on Google, power to you! Mine is not, and the wide reach of these posts clearly shows that you, my audience, like this kind of content from me.

The third one, about optimizing into a hole, was very different. I was sharing my observations about a common trend I'm seeing, and the immediate reaction shows that you're seeing the same thing, too! This post had a call-to-action to subscribe to my email newsletter - yes, to click a link and leave LinkedIn - and hundreds of you did! (That issue goes out tomorrow, here's where to sign up if you don't want to miss it)
