Which way should you go from here?

At Microsoft I taught a workshop intended to help companies understand how to structure their teams. It includes a quote from Lewis Carroll's book "Alice in Wonderland": "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?" "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat. "I don't much care where-" said Alice. "Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat." I've referred back to that quote during coaching or mentoring sessions over the years. It holds even more weight for me now as I operate outside a corporate structure across a portfolio of interests.

Another quote from the book reminds me of the challenges faced when choosing a path: "I daresay you haven't had much practice (believing impossible things),' said the Queen. `When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." When you have so much time and so many choices it's not possible to be bored but you can struggle to make decisions about the path you will take.
