Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, on May 31, made an important announcement regarding the Express Entry program. In his announcement he mentioned which are the top categories that will be targeted in the Express Entry draws in the coming summer.
These category-based draws will happen in general draws and program-specific draws. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) general draws make invitations to the highest-ranking candidates for the permanent residency visa, whereas in the program-specific draws, invitations are made to the highest-ranking candidate limited by the program.?
In these new category draws, IRCC is going to invite the highest-ranking applicants who are either high-level Francophones or are having working experience in the given below sectors:

The newly chosen categories will fill out the vacancies throughout Canada. This is done as immigration has always been seen as an integral part in reducing the labour shortage in Canada. These categories were chosen after the consultation of the Minister with provinces, unions, workers, settlement provider organizations, and immigration researchers.?
Healthcare
The Canadian labour market has a huge vacancy surge in the Healthcare & Social Assistance category after the pandemic caused by COVID-19.
Canadian labour market depends heavily on immigration to fill out the vacancies in this sector. As per the statistics, around 36% of physicians and around a quarter of nurses are actually born outside Canada. This is the reason, IRCC is planning on making immigration easier for foreign-trained healthcare workers to immigrate to Canada. IRCC had already begun working on removing some of the barriers for physicians who are already in Canada on a temporary residency visa.
In the Healthcare & Social Assistance categories, approximately 143,695 job vacancies were found in the fourth quarter of 2022 (Q4 2022). This makes the job vacancies to be 6%.

STEM professions are growing in demand in Canada. Currently, there are no vacancies in the territories for this sector. However, as per the reports by Statistics Canada in November 2022, the rate of retirement is increasing at a high rate. As technology is evolving and automation is increasing, this is creating a skill gap in the Canadian labour market. Hence the need for STEM profiles will eventually increase.
Also, the hourly wages offered for the STEM profile professions are comparatively high than other professions. For example, in Q4 2022, the hourly wage for the STEM profile was around $35.80 while for the Accommodation & Food category, it was $16.35.
Trades
This category includes retail trades and wholesale as per the Statistics Canada data. The vacancies in the retail trades were around 108,795 while the wholesale trade has vacancies of around 30,930. The vacancies in the provinces are given below:
Transport
There were around 43,700 vacancies or about 5% in the transportation & warehousing sector. Since the inception of the year 2021, the vacancies in this sector have been decreasing. As per the provinces, the job vacancies were:

The vacancies in this sector were approximately 10,535 or around 3.9% in Q4 2022. The vacancies rate has been in the declining phase since the year 2021 and reached around 7.2% in Q2 2022. Job vacancies as per the provinces were:
