WHICH PLANE WILL YOU LAND?

In his book, The 4 Disciplines of Execution, Jim Huling uses the metaphor for goal selection of likening yourself to an air traffic controller, in charge of hundreds of circling aircraft. You decide which ones to land.

WHICH GOAL WILL HAVE THE GREATEST IMPACT?

The circling planes are your goals. There’s only room to land one at a time. But how do you select the one to bring down to earth? Which one goal do you focus on? The big question you need to ask is: which goal, when achieved, will create the biggest impact on me and others around me?

Put these goals, or aircraft, onto a shortlist. Once you have chosen the goal to focus on, work out how you can objectively measure it and how you can achieve it. Take full ownership of it. Find one or two things that can help you achieve it. Keep a compelling scoreboard, as the way you keep score is a driver and should make you play the game to win.

Without a doubt, my aircraft was stopping drinking. I decided to land that plane. I could measure it very simply by saying each day, ‘Today I will not drink’. I also put a 365-day calendar on my fridge door (the gateway to wine and beer). Each morning, I ticked off the previous day. This served as a constant reminder of how well I was doing. It became a ritual and a reinforcer of the success of my journey.

It’s easy to get caught in the trap of having too many goals. How do you prioritise? Chris Wilson, founder of Simplify Your Why, says: ‘If you have more than three priorities, you don’t have priorities’. I love this line. It’s so simple but so true. I now live by this.
