Business Owners: How not to hire the wrong person

Business Owners: How not to hire the wrong person

As a business owner, you've no doubt sacrificed a lot and worked your butt off to build up your reputation and your business. Trust me, I understand - I had years travelling the UK as a trainer when my kids were small, working evenings, weekends and it's exhausting, but worth it when you love what you do! When you've put that much effort into building up your business, you don't want to risk it all by hiring the wrong person.

Early on my business grew really quickly and I made a massive mistake hiring the wrong person myself - bamboozled by stellar qualifications and experience, I didn't trust my instinct, was in a rush to hire and it cost me a huge national contract. I won it back later, but jeez that was a scary time. Fast forward 12 years - I am an experienced interview coach (my roots are in HR), I never stop learning about interviews and I love coaching business owners in how to get it right.

If you've never had any training in how to interview, are you winging it? or worse still, putting off even looking for staff? Maybe you get anxious before you interview and don't feel confident about interviewing? Have you ever been confused because you offered someone a job but they turned it down?

With unemployment at a record low (we've recently had the lowest rates for 40 yrs) - candidates can afford to be choosy. As an interview coach, I am increasingly dealing with many people who have to choose between 2 job offers - fab position to be in - so getting it right and making the best first impression as a Manager when you interview really matters.

People need to add real value to your business. Whether it's a receptionist, salesperson, engineer or a project manager - recruiting the right person will help you keep your existing customers, enable you to grow and prevent your head literally falling off with stress.

A professional Interview & Selection Coach, I deliver 1-1 coaching for business owners and managers who want to avoid the cost of a recruitment agency, feel confident in interviewing and make sure they have the skills and tools needed to hire the right person.

Here's what I can do to help:

  • Work out what type of person you need for your business & help you work out what's in it for them?
  • Create a job description & person spec. (Trust me, you do need these and candidates expect them)
  • Write an advert to attract your target person and advise on where to place the ad (everything is online these days)
  • How to select people for interview & how to deal with unsuccessful candidates
  • Interview coaching - creating the right first impressions, how to conduct the best interview, different styles and approaches to suit you and your business
  • Interview questions to ask - and questions not ask!
  • Reaching the final decision, job offer and references

I typically come to visit you at your place of work - it's usually better that way, then I can see you as your 'candidates' will at interview. My rates are seriously affordable for SME business owners, my services are flexible to make it work for you and you'll never have to spend money on using a recruitment agency. Great advice. The wrong hire can cost dearly in wasted time, stress and low morale. These are great solutions
