A few newsletters back, I went a little more in-depth on our ‘Genius Zone Model’.

Check it out if you missed it or would like a re-cap.

A common misconception is that people think leading and managing means the same thing…

But that’s wrong.

Managers can be leaders but not all leaders can be managers.

Let’s first define the difference between leading and managing:

  • A leader guides or sets the direction of a team or business.
  • A manager keeps control of that direction.

Most people can be both but some struggle with one over the other.

Some of us are more natural leaders and some are more natural managers.

If you’re a manager, you need to be able to do both: lead and manage.

Do you believe that you’re one or the other?

Managers, control or manage upwards and downwards (and typically lead their team).

Most people start out as a worker then make a transition to manager.

But some workers are more natural leaders, not natural managers.

So when engineers go from individual contributor to engineering manager, it often results in a bad outcome.

They should ease into more of a leadership role where they’re setting the direction.

People who are not natural managers but are natural leaders, do still need to know what we call “light touch management*”.*

Light touch management involves:

  • managing your managers
  • managing your team
  • managing yourself
  • and the ability to work with other peer managers

Managing is one of the most underrated and valuable skills to have.

Are you a leader?

Are you a manager?

Are you both?

Who you believe you are is the first step towards maximizing your impact and income.

You get access to:

? Training videos and non-technical frameworks for solving “people problems”

? Live mastermind sessions with leadership coaches and other like-minded people

? A Slack community for additional help and networking.

? When you join, you get a 1 on 1 session with Stephen Bates to develop a plan for you to reach whatever your next goal is.

This is a community where you can learn, get a sounding board from each other, and benefit from expanding our networks to create more opportunities.
