The oldest pharmaceutical company in the world was founded in 1668, in Germany.

Friedrich Jacob Merck (1621—1678) acquired a pharmacy called the Engel-Apotheke. Today is still in the possession of the family and open to the public in the heart of Darmstadt, Germany.

After 200 years, a direct descendant, Emanuel Merck began industrial production of alkaloids in 1827, a class of plant-derived substances discovered shortly before. As an example, Caffeine formula is a stimulant alkaloid.

Currently, Merck is one of the best-known companies in the world, positioned as one of the top pharmaceutical companies with science always driving business, now focusing on 3 main milestones: Healthcare, LifeScience and Performance Materials.

In 2019, Merck KGaA, (Darmstadt, Germany), generated sales of € 16.2 billion in 66 countries.
