Friedrich Jacob Merck (1621—1678) acquired a pharmacy called the Engel-Apotheke. Today is still in the possession of the family and open to the public in the heart of Darmstadt, Germany.
After 200 years, a direct descendant, Emanuel Merck began industrial production of alkaloids in 1827, a class of plant-derived substances discovered shortly before. As an example, Caffeine formula is a stimulant alkaloid.
