Which IoT device is better: A Roomba or a Dalek?

... here is a quick comparison for those of you in the market to buy ...

Dalek

  1. can't ascend a flight of stairs (solved in 1988[1])
  2. aware of its surroundings
  3. equipped with plunger useful for unblocking backed-up sinks
  4. kills any carbon based life-form (pet or otherwise)
  5. highly intelligent yet can not be trained
  6. can do any job that requires killing or being rude in general
  7. known natural predators: time lords, Movellans
  8. power source: nuclear, antimatter, The Eye of Harmony
  9. Android/iOS app: no

[1] Remembrance of the Daleks: Part One

Roomba

  1. unable to ascend a flight of stairs
  2. oblivious to its surroundings until it creates a map of the environment (occasionally gets lost in the neighborhood)
  3. gets along well with pets from the same household
  4. as dumb as a pocket calculator with wheels (but can be trained)
  5. has 1 job in which it sucks
  6. natural predators: unknown
  7. power source: 22.5V 1.25A AC
  8. Android/iOS app: yes

?? Conclusion ??

While Daleks seem great for solving any plumbing emergency, and theoretically hold the key to renewable energy, their hostility toward all organic life forms makes them a challenge to live with.

The Roomba therefore is a clear winner, especially for young families, or if you have pets.

Lost roomba
