Which Fleets will Be Certified Idle Reduction Leaders?

Which fleet operators will become the first authentic idle reduction certified green fleet leaders in the U.S. and Canada? Here’s GoGreen’s situational analysis (after 17 years of research); most North American fleet operators will not be fully electrified for a long time yet. Many have less than 5% of their fleet assets electrified right now. In the meantime, fleet operators across the US and Canada, including many who proclaim to be sustainability leaders, are prolific idlers.

This is in all sectors; government fleets, utility fleets, EMS fleets, construction fleets, private fleets, you name it. We are treating our atmosphere as an idling emissions dump, ignoring our employees' unconscious idling behavior as if it was no big deal.

It’s a big deal all right; adding up to 6.6 Billion gallons a year in our personal and work vehicles parked going nowhere, creating 33 Million tons of carbon emissions annually. In addition, it’s creating air pollution and poor air conditions across our two countries.

Perhaps the most pernicious result of corporate fleets' idling behavior is the example and the message they are sending to the really big prize; the motoring public and their 300 million fossil-fueled vehicles. It’s as if government leaders in both the US and Canada are saying; “don’t worry about idling because we don’t. Get yourself an EV.” Senior policymakers in the US and Canada are treating our North American idling epidemic as if it’s a non-thing while focusing on electrification and dismissing our massive idling problem as if it didn’t exist.

As a result, our unconscious idling problem is worse than it’s ever been. Take a look around your town or city. You might not be able to see the exhaust like you could in 1970, but trust us, it’s there... laced with carbon and toxins. In fact, you couldn’t stand next to a 2023 ‘fossil fuel sipper’ in an enclosed space for very long (which is why our automotive friends must vent today’s ‘cleaner’ exhaust).
