Which of These Five Key Steps Prevent You Getting The Job You Truly Desire?

Which of These Five Key Steps Prevent You Getting The Job You Truly Desire?

Whether you've just lost your job, or soon will; or you know it's time to take an important career move, your next steps are critical.

Don’t be tempted to go for any job in preference to unemployment, or the job you hold currently.

A hasty move now might be your worst career move.

When you suddenly lose your job, or have an urgent need to secure a new one, is any job worth taking just to bridge the gap and help you pay the bills?

I know, I know, the bills must be paid; but ask yourself this. If you are going to use your valuable time, effort, and energy in job searching, why look for a job you don’t really want?

The damage to you and your future career might be irreparable.

You might think you have no choice - there’s no jobs advertised; there’s nothing round here; I’m too old; I’ve too much experience, or not enough; ……. The list goes on.

You, like so many executives, might also feel you’ve either been in the wrong job, the wrong company, or the wrong organisational culture?

Don’t make your biggest mistake now.

There are 5 key steps to getting the job you genuinely desire

Step One: You Must Define What Your Perfect Next Role Would Look Like

·??????If you say anything like – “a challenging role, in a growing organisation with strong environmental values, a positive culture and an inspirational leadership team, where I can use my experience and develop further” nobody will have a clue what job you want.

·??????You must be able to define it in terms of the level you’d be at; the functional role you’d be doing; the size of organisation you’d like; the sector you’d be working in; the geographical influence you’d like and the location you’d be working from.

Step Two: You Must Define What Makes You the Perfect Candidate

·??????If you say anything like – “my years in the sector; I achieve all my KPI’s; I’m a great team player; I grow my people; I’m a completer-finisher; and I’m a strong believer in delivering my best” nobody will know why you should be considered.

·??????You must be able to define it in terms of the value you bring; the difference you make and the impact you will have. If you can’t define it, nobody will take the time to work it out for you – and therefore nobody will know.

Step Three: You Must Ensure Your CV Presents You Effectively

·??????Your CV should not be a list of your jobs to date with regurgitated job descriptions. Nobody will be buying your previous job descriptions. They want to know what you’ve been doing and how well you’ve been doing it.

·??????Your CV has a 2 – 7 second first life and must clearly demonstrate what makes you different to everyone else who might be in the running for it. It’s your marketing document and it has a huge job to do in your absence.

Step Four: You Must Approach The Job Market Correctly

·??????The job market is not the same as it was when you left University. Then you were hoping someone might give you a chance, take a risk and train you. You are now older, more experience and at a higher level. Your search must be more productive too.

·??????You Must Approach the job Market from all angles. Recruiters will not look kindly on amateur approaches, or if you expect them to research you in detail before shortlisting you. You must be more professional – and network yourself correctly too.

Step Five: You Must Be Ready For Job Interviews

·??????Interviews are still an important part of the process – and the decision-makers don’t take prisoners. Don’t expect them to ‘make allowances’ for lack of interview experience, or poor preparation. At your level they will expect more! And it’s their neck on the line!

·??????You must be prepared to be challenged and scrutinised.?You must be seen as the ideal candidate at every stage, from what they see, what you say and how you say it; be prepared to respond well to questions; and have grown-up questions to ask them too!?

Aye yes, with so much job competition, it can be tempting to snatch up that first one that comes your way. But from what I've heard from many other career coaches as well. There ARE good jobs out there. And if you do it right, you can find the perfect one no matter who you are.
