Which Cybersecurity Groups to Join on LinkedIn?

As many of you know, LinkedIn is the place to go if you’re looking to reach professionals, connect with them, and share your thoughts. And that’s especially true if you’re talking about IT security professionals. Whether you’re a professional yourself or merely want to broaden your knowledge of the industry, you will find that some of the brightest minds in cybersecurity have come to prioritize LinkedIn as their go-to social media platform.

If you’re looking to enrich your feed with news from the realm of cybersecurity, one of the best ways of achieving that, besides following specific accounts directly, is by joining dedicated cybersecurity groups. You can choose from countless options based on your specific interests (Cloud, Internet of Things, Identity Access Management…), geographical location, and preferred language. There is one catch, however: Each LinkedIn profile is limited to 100 groups they can join.

That’s why I prepared a short list of five groups I recommend you start with so you get the best information and news without depleting too much of your allocated group space. Because I can’t possibly cover all cybersecurity domains in five pieces, I decided to go for more general groups so anyone who joins gets something out of it. Before delving any deeper, please keep in mind that the listed groups are of no particular order. At whopping 277, 000 members, this behemoth of a group is the perfect starting point for those who wish to dip their toes in cybersecurity. You will find posts from various individuals across the industry and companies aiming to inform readers and promote services. Upon joining, you will notice a pinned post penned by the group’s founder. If you just want to browse through, this might not bear much relevance to you, but if you are considering taking a more active role in the group, please take the time to familiarize yourself with the rules to avoid having your posts flagged or deleted. 2.?Information Security Careers Network (ISCN)

This group is an excellent addition for those looking to map the competitive landscape of various service providers and their offerings. At 134, 000 members strong, you are sure to bump into something you can draw inspiration from! Other post types include polls, articles, and job offers. You can also find some great discounts for ongoing pieces of training by certain companies. Join today and see for yourself!

3.?Big Data, Data Science, AI, IoT, Cyber Security & Blockchain

Due to its multifaceted nature, this group houses nearly 1, 000, 000 members from all over the globe. As the name might imply, there is a plethora of topics being discussed. Are you interested in AI? They’ve got you covered. Maybe you fancy a bit of Machine Learning? You got it! Although this is not unique to this group, I really recommend you pay attention to who posts about topics you’re interested in and consider following them or connecting with them. With the vast number of members, this is a great way to build your LinkedIn connections!

4.?Cyber Security

Although boasting a comparatively smaller roster of “merely” 84, 000 members, I found this group to often provide me with information from people higher up in the ranks. You can find a diverse combination of recommended certifications and training, useful insights, and reports. The one thing I did find is that content moderation is not as strict as with the other groups, which carries its own positives and negatives. Despite that, however, I definitely find it worth the slot in your 100!

5.?Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) & Cyber Security

Last but not least, this group is focused on all the usual cybersecurity topics with an added flavor – I tend to find more incident reports and information about ransomware in this group than in the rest. At 103, 000 members strong, you will be provided with a constant stream of news, report highlights, tips, and webinars you can attend. There’s also the occasional meme or a funny video to brighten up your day!

Easing yourself into cybersecurity isn’t easy, especially if you are not a practitioner yourself. There is a bunch of unfamiliar and confusing abbreviations and terms and an equal amount of gloomy and panicky news and reports.
