We're all given good guidelines about how to send a connection request if you want to connect with them. Research about them, write a personalized message, engage with their posts, etc.
But how often do you think, "Should I accept this connection request or not?" Probably never.
We accept random connection requests on LinkedIn because we are playing the number game. We've all been there and I can't say I'm not guilty of that. But here's the thing: We can have only 30,000 connections on LinkedIn and let's make it meaningful, shall we?
You can watch this video to understand this article better:
Here are three things to look for before accepting a connection request on LinkedIn:
- Complete LinkedIn Profile: Here are the bare minimum requirements if you want to be accepted as a LinkedIn connection - A display picture (it's a must), a decent Headline, Organization where you are currently working, Organization(s) where you've previously worked, Schools/Colleges you've been to. Basic work and education details are musts.
- Engagements: We're on LinkedIn to connect with like-minded people and learn from different people, right? And what is a better way to understand someone's thought process than to read a post/article/comment by them? Even when you don't find any posts, you still may find comments or likes on posts. You can then move to the next point.
- Value: I know this one is highly subjective, but before you accept a connection request you may like to think what value the other person would add to your connections. More importantly, think of what value can you add to them. Answer this question: Why should I accept this connection request? Can this person help me in any way? Can I help this person in any way? If you find the answers to these questions, you'll understand if the person should be a part of your network or not.
Here is a summary:
I know this is a short one but I hope it was helpful for you. Let me know what you think of "accepting the right connection requests" in the comments.
