Last week, a friend of mine called me.She had two offers. Similar roles in similar kind of organizations. Let us call those companies, A & B. A was offering 10% more compensation.
I asked her a question. Who is going to be your manager ? She said in both the places she is going to have highly competent managers and she liked interacting with both of them. The gut feel was that they are going to be great professionals to work with and she can learn a lot from them.
I asked her another question. How long the managers have been in their current roles ? One was there for the last 4 years and the other person for less than a year and is new to the organization. She was quite perplexed with this question. How does this matter ?
I told her this is going to determine your way of working to a great extent.
a) The manager who is new to the role will still be finding his way and performance in the organization
The pros are
He will be more open to ideas
Might like you to align with him and give support
Will be keen to perform and show that the team is doing well.
The cons are
He might still be finding his fort
The network and internal alignment might still be a question mark
How much can he guide you ?
b) The manager who is established in the role will have the following pros
Will be quite aware of what works and does not in the organization
Will be quite secure and supportive of the new member
Will be more confident if he is a good performer
The cons are
Will he accept your thinking and new ways of working ?
She said that definitely these aspects make a difference in how she is going to thrive in the new environment. Do you think this view of a new job matters ?

5 年well put sandeep.? it absolutely matters.? the manager plays a vital role, but then we need give a benefit of doubt for the 'personality' or 'persona' of the manager, and how has he/she has grown in the ladder in his/her career.? and it works vis-a-versa too, the manager who is hiring a 2+ yrs executive is looking for the right attitude, being receptive, and one who has hunger to learn. Then the combination works.
