Which is better?
Stanley's Note:
Direct or Brand Marketing?
Which is better?
The real answer is, what are you trying to achieve?
For most of you reading this newsletter, Brand Marketing will be the answer.
So what is the difference?
Seth Godin, in his book “This is Marketing”, defines them as this:
DIRECT MARKETING
Direct marketing is a marketing action you take where there is a designed (and often immediate) action to follow.?
This is the email delivered directly to the prospect with the call to action that says “Buy now” or “Click here” or something like that.
It’s the sales funnel where you start with a lot at the top and work it down to very few sales but the bottom.
BRAND MARKETING
As Godin says, “Coca Cola does not think that if you see an ad during the Super Bowl that you will leave the Super Bowl party and go buy Coke.”?
The idea, of course, is they are creating brand affinity and top of mind awareness. That way, the next time you are in the grocery store, you will think of Coke. Brand Marketing is important and is how long term success is often created in Advertising and Marketing.
For many business owners, that Direct Marketing approach seems pretty desirable.
To be able to show that if I spend $1, I will get back $2 is like printing money.
We forget to realise, though, that we probably only get to pocket $1.10 of that money with $0.90 going to Google/Facebook/LinkedIn.
It’s a great short term win, but long term, we become a slave to the machine and without we don’t have control of our business.
It doesn’t mean Direct Marketing is a bad option. Just use it wisely.
But definitely start Brand Marketing now.
Play the long game.
Put in the work.

There has never been a better time to start a business in today's world.
With social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram and Tik Tok, we have direct access to any audiences we are trying to find.
The best thing about these platforms is that very few businesses and/or people use them effectively.
Especially LinkedIn!
Here at The Attention Seeker, I built a 7-figure business in less than two years by exclusively using LinkedIn to build my Personal Brand.

3 年Stanley, of all your posts - I’ve probably enjoyed reading this one the most. You’ve demystified the vagueness of the difference of marketing options into plain english for me and the linkages to Coke helped. I like the way you explained Brand Marketing and the reason for it. Thanks for that. I get it now. They say a smart person can take complex things and explain them simply, so I guess I’m giving you a big complement. Cheers!
