In simple terms, when it comes to blood pressure, it is generally better to have it within a healthy range rather than too high or too low.
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can lead to serious health issues like heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.
On the other hand, low blood pressure, known as hypotension, can cause symptoms like dizziness, fainting, and fatigue. Therefore, maintaining blood pressure within the normal range is crucial for overall health and well-being.
What is Normal BP?
The gold standard is 120/80.
The main difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure is:
- Systolic pressure measures the force of blood against artery walls when the heart contracts and pumps blood out to the body[1][2][3][4]. It is the top number in a blood pressure reading.
- Diastolic pressure measures the force of blood against artery walls when the heart relaxes between beats and refills with blood[1][2][3][4]. It is the bottom number in a blood pressure reading.
Both systolic and diastolic pressures are important for monitoring heart health[1][2][5]. However, studies show that high systolic pressure is associated with a greater risk of stroke and heart disease compared to elevated diastolic pressure[2][5].
Doctors tend to monitor systolic pressure more closely, especially in older patients, as it is a stronger indicator of cardiovascular disease risk[2][5]. Some people have isolated systolic hypertension, where systolic pressure is high (above 140 mmHg) but diastolic pressure is normal (below 90 mmHg)[2].

In summary, while both systolic and diastolic pressures provide valuable information about heart function, systolic pressure is considered the more important number for assessing cardiovascular health risks[2][5].

It does need to be highlighted as this goes across the board with many illnesses and medications. Biological differences matter and need to be discussed...in my opinion
