Be Where Your Feet Are #9

Messaging matters. It matters as a Leader and Manager. It matters as a Parent. It matters as a Coach. It matters as a Spouse. When a message is meaningful and consistent, it influences our subconscious, reinforces our aspirations, reminds us what matters most and acts as a reminder that we are not traveling alone in this journey we call life. The way I understand the brain works... we can influence our subconscious and our thoughts by what we say out loud (a lot like those affirmations your mom made you say when you were young), or from those positive words you read, hear or have directed at you from someone who loves you. More positive messaging matters now... and there is not enough of it out on these platforms. These past few months, pacing through my house on endless conference calls, I’ve become acutely aware that messages we placed throughout our home to encourage our children have, in fact, been inspiring and uplifting me.

Each day, as I pass this sign in my house, I am struck by how wholly it captures my most pure perspective on the world; reflecting the vantage point and commitments of my “best self.” Reading this sign once a day is food for the soul. This sign has adorned the walls of four homes, and accompanied our family across three states through four moves. I have passed this sign leaving for work at the NBA League Office, Madison Square Garden Sports, and now at Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. From the family room, to the kitchen, to the garage door (hung purposefully so it provided one final reminder before my three daughters left the house); these words have prepared my family and I to greet the world with our “Palms Up” and our intentions set. For me, a read in the morning before the chaos, pace and activity starts is a grounding reminder of “WMI” (What’s Most Important). My favorite line, ‘Above all else, love and you will do wonderful things in this world,’ is the lasting thought that guides my outlook and drives my personal and professional decisions. Do you see yourself in these short, clear words? What speaks to you? Will you ‘explore new paths’ today? Will you ‘listen to the big people and the little people,’ in your office? And, especially this year, are your ‘eyes and ears’ truly open?

Love it. Life is much more vibrant when we use gratitude as a lens to see it. Gratitude changes everything. Have a great day!

Giving thanks for every blessing is always something I try to do. When you stop and write down all the blessings in your life, big and small, it changes the way you look at what’s ahead. Thank you for messages like this Scott O'Neil!
