Be Where Your Feet Are #6

Messaging matters. It matters as a Leader and Manager. It matters as a Parent. It matters as a Coach. It matters as a Spouse. When a message is meaningful and consistent, it influences our subconscious, reinforces our aspirations, reminds us what matters most and acts as a reminder that we are not traveling alone in this journey we call life. These past few months, pacing through my house on endless conference calls, I’ve become acutely aware that messages we placed throughout our home to encourage our children have, in fact, been inspiring and uplifting me.  Today, and especially this year, we remember the “fun and laughter” of life – and we focus on “enjoying” and not simply “enduring” each day, experience, moment and learning.

In all living, have much fun and laughter. Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured. Messaging matters.

Let us not forget – in everything these past months have thrown our way – that we have found laughter, we have made laughter and it has been the vaccine we have needed at this time. Yes – there are days when we do not feel like getting up to bat. The isolation, watching the news, the exposed ugliness, the suffering, the anxiety and ignorance – we have seen and felt so much pain. And there are moments, surrounded by our loved ones, when we forget everything that exists outside the four walls we’ve tucked ourselves behind for safe keeping. When the best laid summer vacation plans, cancelled, could never compete with a backyard firepit. When your Outlook calendar reminds you that you should have been in London this week, just as the elementary schooler at the kitchen table next to you successfully delivers a book report to classmates, and glances your way with an ear-to-ear grin for approval. Choose to smile. Choose to appreciate. Choose to use this time to enjoy the gifts we have been given. The gift of a rowdy dinner table. The gift of time and the ability to choose how and where to spend it.

We almost always have the choice to laugh or cry. (I have been known to shed a tear – or two – in moments of happiness and sadness.) In the end though, we get to choose our attitude, who we spend time with and how we react to situations. Choose to be around people who give you positive energy. Choose to be in situations where laughter is valued over fear and happy is valued over misery. Choose laughing. Choose smiles. Choose fun. We need this now more than ever.
