Where are you on the wealth ladder?
Standing at 61.7% of the total, people in the lowest wealth bracket (under USD 10,000) have the biggest percentage chance of rising to the middle bracket (between USD 10,000 and USD 100,000) according to our Global Wealth Report.
Sometimes, people leapfrog the middle and even land at the top (more than USD 1 million). For example, in 2000, 7.7% of people from the lowest bracket jumped straight to the third – and, in 10 years, 1.6% went from the lowest to the highest bracket.
"In every wealth band and over any time horizon, it’s consistently likelier for people to climb up the wealth ladder than slip down it." UBS Global Wealth Report 2024
Our research reveals that these rosy outlooks only improve over time. Whatever the timespan, people are more likely to climb the wealth ladder than slip down it.
Moving to and from the middle
Life's good in the middle. People in the middle wealth bracket have a 37.7% chance of moving to the top, and an almost 50% likelihood of staying where they are. Better still, these odds improve over time.
What goes up… doesn't always come down
What about those in the highest wealth bracket, where the only direction is down?
In reality, most people don't move down at all. Our research shows that the likelihood of staying in the top bracket will rise from 75.6% in 2010-2020 to an estimated 78.5% in 2020-2030.
Where next?
While you’re more likely to gain in wealth than lose it, wealth can’t be taken for granted. To make the most of your wealth, you need to nurture it.
Managing wealth is our craft and we're here to help. As the world's only truly global wealth manager, we’re uniquely positioned to connect you with the knowledge and experience that can help you to achieve your goals.
