Where Are You Walking By?

If I ever ask you to go canoeing with me, think twice before you say yes. Not because I’m unsafe, but because I will likely take detours throughout the day to pick up garbage on or around the river or stream. It really bothers me when I see trash or garbage, whether it’s on the side of the road or in a river.
Recently, I was taking a walk around the neighborhood and I noticed trash along the way, and I picked it up. Not all of it, but much of it. Instead of walking by, I chose to pick it up. It may not make a big difference, but it does to me and every little bit DOES make a difference.
This is especially true when it comes to people. Where are you walking by when it comes to people? What situation are you walking by at work? What situation or encounter are you walking by with your friends? Are you walking by people in need and why? What situation in your own life or relationships are you walking by?
I would never suggest that I or anyone else can (or ought to) tell you what to do, but are you aware that you’re walking by? Are you consciously walking by? Are you aware of the impact of you walking by and are you okay with that impact?
As you begin this new year, keep your eyes, ears and heart open and catch yourself walking by … and then decide if you want to keep walking.
