Where are You, if not in the Now?

What time is it, and where are you?

It's a great question to ask. Students will refer to the clock on the wall and answer that they're at school, in English class. Yes, it's English class, and it may be 11:45 or 14:32, but that's not what I'm after...

Where are you, really?

So where are you, really? A Zen master would know the answer immediately: here and now. There is nowhere else you can be, except in your imagination. And even when imagining things, you are always physically in the here and now, no matter how your mind wanders.

You are here now. You can’t be anywhere else. – Zen proverb

Living in the now is not limited to the mindful realm of Zen monks, lifestyle gurus or inspirational quotes. You cannot actually be anywhere else, simple as that. That's crucial information for life and for tackling verb tenses.

Your starting point

So instill this in your students: whenever you use language to describe and explain the world around you, whether events are real or imagined, your position is always NOW on the timeline of life. Now, that's a great starting point.
