Where You Have Been Does Not Determine Where You Will Go
Personal reinvention is a skillset that every person should master.?If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that things can change in the blink of an eye.?That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however, it is a fact of life.?My business partner and I just started a podcast, The Iron Rangers, and in the introductory episode we touch on how wildly different our paths in business have been.?I grew up in corporate America, he’s been an entrepreneur for decades.?I love coaching and building teams, he likes to leave that portion of the business for someone else so he can continue to drive the vision.?The one thing that we have in common is our love of building business and creating relationships.?
Many people will never realize their full potential or worse yet, never experience the sheer joy of discovering a true passion because of the negative, limiting, and destructive dialogue on repeat in their mind.?How many times have all of us hesitated or simply refused to apply for a job because that inner voice convinces us that we won’t be a good fit??Without even realizing it, we self-sabotage and created barriers to success.?If you are a hiring manager for your company, can you honestly say you’ve never had preconceived ideas about a candidate based on their history??We’re all guilty of it, and it’s terrible.?We have inadvertently built roadblocks because we weren’t seeing the full picture.?Personally, I put less importance on resumes or work history than most during an interview.?Obviously, it is relevant, and I still want to see it to start a conversation.?I want to know what you’ve failed at and how you adapted.?I want to hear about the situations that ended poorly but gave you a new perspective.?I want interesting, dynamic stories.?Don’t just spill the corporate word salad because you think that is what I want to hear- I do not want to spend the time listening to it.?
Bottom line- I want to know where you are going.?The destination may not be crystal clear to you yet, but one thing is certain; you are going somewhere, and you will be a model for someone. Celebrate this.?Lead with the lessons you’ve learned, that is the story that will captivate and inspire others to push beyond their long-held nonsense and the lies we create.?Turn up the volume on your inner advocate and silence your inner critic.?Your history is a feature, not a flaw.??
