What are your lessons on Career Development ? This month I'm spending time with my team to make sure everyone takes the time to think about career development. These are the tips I have shared with the team. What other ideas or suggestions do you have that you can share?
- Reflect - If you have 90 mins for this, spend 80 mins thinking and 10 mins writing things down. I’m just re-iterating this is not a documentation exercise, the richness in the plan is your thinking about what you wan to do with your career so we can plan together and I can support you.
- Joy – What brings you joy? Consider your career path and roles that brings you joy and build on your strengths. This will help you to be fulfilled in the longer term and not just do a role.
- Feedback – Consider the feedback you have had over the years both your strengths and areas to improve. Factor them in to your thinking.
- Mentors and Sponsors – Carefully think about what you need to learn and who can be the mentors that can help you with those. How do you find your sponsor ? It’s a question I want you to think about and we can discuss in our 1:1
- Experience vs Potential – Are there new areas of potential that you may not have explored ? How would you know what your potential is ? (yes it’s another question for you to think ??)
- Where are you going??– Often it’s easy to think about what’s the next role you want or want to do, but think about what would be the role you want to do after that and after that in the longer term. Unless you know your destination it will be easy to get distracted visiting many different locations(roles) but never get to the place you want to go.
- Growth mindset - Reflect on what you are passionate about and what will really challenge you. (Thanks Alex Terblanche for the addition)
Would love to learn from you and other ideas and suggestions you may have ?
Very well written Vajira! The first step is to "introspect" and these points just compliment the beginning itself.

3 年Love this , I would add look back and reflect on your previous roles. Ask why did you accept them? Why did you leave them? What did you enjoy most /least about the roles. When assessing future roles ,if there are a high number of activities in that role you enjoy doing, there is a higher likelihood you will enjoy that role. If you enjoy what you are doing you are more likely to be successful. Also don’t focus so much on the name of the role. Role names change all the time. The functions of the role are what you work towards. I always recommend to my team not to focus on one role but rather 2 or 3 at most . Then look for the similar skill sets required and develop those first. Doing so provides more opportunities .

3 年Thank you for sharing, Vajira! Development is driven by you but it is much more effective when you get help from others along the way
