WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO? AND WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?
In my last article I asked ‘Is your main thing still the main thing’? This article ties in with that because I hope you’ve been thinking about what I said previously and I’d like to expand on it. If you missed it just click the link and take a quick look.?
There’s something about the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new chapter that gives us the liberty to make a choice.
Do we close off the old chapter and move on to newer, better things? Or do we build on the previous chapter as we strive forward in the new?
Assessing where we’re at, both personally and professionally, is periodically necessary.?While we want to enjoy the journey and not focus exclusively on the destination, we do need to have some idea of where our destination is going to be.?If we don’t pick a particular destination ahead of the journey, we tend to go nowhere particular at all.?Then suddenly, we look around when we notice that all our contemporaries are going grey and then (great shock!) notice that we are too! And we realize that our journey is in at least its latter stages.
Constraints help us become more creative and innovative. With no constraints, we can take a lot longer to hone in on our targets. Time is a constraint. We all know that, before we head off on a vacation, we rush to clear our desk of all the outstanding work. We plan ahead for circumstances that may arise while we’re away. We plan ahead for our vacation so that we fit in all the things we’d like to do while we’re away.?

We eliminate things that we might want to do on vacation but which don’t stack up in the excitement factor against other things we ‘must’ do due to the time limitations. We have limited time, limited opportunity (because we’ll only be in that location a short time) and limited resources. So we prioritize and make the most of every minute, every dollar, every experience.
Life is like that vacation. Not quite as obvious that there is a limited time, but there definitely is. Perhaps now, at the beginning of a new year, it’s a good milestone to both review how we’ve spent our lives so far and how we intend to spend what remains to us.
Get some perspective. See the actual trees rather than a blurred forest as we rush through it.?Plan that destination. If that seems a little difficult at this point, think about what you’d like as your epitaph. You only have a limited space for that headstone to say what your ‘main thing’ was…
Once you have that destination decided, then plan your route with plenty of sightseeing excursions and stops along the way to appreciate the view.?Perhaps it’s attending that school event you really ‘don’t have time for’ but would mean the world to someone if you were there. Or perhaps it’s taking that quiet walk along the beach every morning. Or perhaps it’s stopping what you’re rushing to finish to tell someone how much they mean to you. You get the idea.
Stop. Take a deep breath. Begin the journey again. This time, with purpose, passion and patience.

3 年I appreciate this type of open reflection Andre. There aren't any easy and explicit rules to tell us this is the time to move on or this is the time to stay. There are guidelines generated by how we want our 'vacation' (love the metaphor by the way) to be. Excellent thought spark to kick off the year.

3 年Whoa. Quite the meaningful topic for me as I roll through my third decade in business. I remain passionate about what I do, I’ve perfected my life-work integration (your positioning) and the huge difference is I can more easily say “no” to things, set my priorities to suit MY needs and not others, and see myself sorting through what I want my legacy to be. I’m not going anywhere soon but many chapters have closed. One thing I know is that what I am today and what I bring to the table are built on the vast experiences I gained throughout these years and so those chapters make for a better “read” today.
