Where will you find joy & awe?

As you head into the holiday break, how will you ensure that you come back to work relaxed and rejuvenated, rather than frazzled and frustrated?

I know Christmas can be stressful and chaotic; you may have family members that push all your buttons or you may be lonely as you grieve for someone you have lost this year, and coupled with anxiety about what next year will bring that can create a challenging time.

Being intentional about how you spend your holiday time can help you find the right balance between time for friends and family and time for yourself.

I invite you to reflect on these questions to shape your time:

What brings you joy?

We have all heard about triggers, which set off stress and reactivity within us, but have you heard of ‘glimmers’?

Glimmers are essentially the opposite of triggers – they spark emotions such as joy, peace and safety. They can be moments such as cuddling a baby or pet, sharing a meal with friends, or dancing to a favourite song.

We can both seek out these glimmers when we know what they are and we can savour them when they pop up unexpectedly. They help us build new neural pathways and increase our resilience for when times are tough.

This holiday, schedule time to do the things you love and bask in the glimmers.

What inspires awe?

The experience of awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that exceeds our current understanding of the world, which makes us feel small yet connected to each other and the universe. Researchers Ulrich Weger and Johannes Wagemann describe it as follows: “awe inspires the wish to let shine, to acknowledge and to unite.”

Music, art, and nature can all inspire awe when we take a moment to drink it in and notice how we feel.

Research is now showing that experiences of awe can improve our well-being and relieve symptoms of stress so carving out some time to be in nature and soak it in may well be the antidote you need to a hectic holiday season.

Over New Year I will be enjoying a hiking tour in Tasmania, and I am so looking forward to soaking in the night sky and being filled with awe at the beauty and power of the natural world.

What will you do to expand your experiences of awe?

However you spend your holiday season I thank you once again for connecting with me this year, and wish you the happiest of holidays.

With love

Sue
