Where Are We Operating ?
Over the years, both I and you(reader) must have come across diverse people each having their own view of the world, the company they work for, and themselves.
Yet we tend to love and respect few, and we really want to restrict our conversations with others. I tend to think over this a-lot, at times over think, what moves me is when people including myself take career choices basis people they will work with over the roles/opportunities they will get.
This keeps me thinking and asking, where are we operating ? and where should we operate?
If you are in @Finance or @Marketing, term ATL / BTL should not be new, a common marketing term/strategy used in the advertising industry, to promote any product or brand.
However let me attempt to provide a Non-Finance view, on this, which is so relevant for Finance folks, having spend a decent time in business finance roles, I clearly am learning what ATL / BLT means to Finance beyond the contours of P&L.
So what is ATL/BTL ?
ATL (Above the line) as Ownership, Accountability, Responsibility, and BTL (below the line) as Blame, Excuses and Denial.
None of us aspires to be operate below the line, however reality is some of us are in that space, and we might find answers in way our First Response is to the problem, and then followed on by actions revealing our reliability, and creditability.
So where Do I stand ? to start with I praise myself to think in those lines, I do tend to push myself to swim above the line, however I definitely note myself when I sink down, what helps is really having amazing friends at workplace, who are honest and love to shape you up, in the journey to keep your head above water or line. However I also question myself does finance needs to score a perfect 100 on this, or a 70 is good, what is your view?

1 年We all have blind spots in our knowledge and opinions. The bad news is that they can leave us blind to our blindness, which gives us false confidence in our judgment and prevents us from rethinking. The good news is that with the right kind of confidence, we can learn to see ourselves more clearly and update our views. In driver’s training we were taught to identify our visual blind spots and eliminate them with the help of mirrors and sensors. In life, since our minds don’t come equipped with those tools, we need to learn to recognize our cognitive blind spots and revise our thinking accordingly. You have explained ATL/BTL framework so beautifully and this, once actioned upon, can empower/equip anyone to decide their path. Thank you Anuj for writing this :)
