Where teachers can command big bucks, TikTok ban lifted, and more top news

The UAE has launched a drive to hire nearly 3,000 Indian teachers for its government schools, The National reports. The Gulf state is offering significantly higher salaries of Dh16,000 (nearly ?3 lakh) per month, almost 10 times of what teachers normally make in India. But the recruitment agency is finding it challenging to convince potential jobseekers that the fat, tax-free pay packets are indeed authentic. The lucrative salaries – much higher than the Dh4,000-12,500 that Emirati schools are known to pay – are aimed at attracting competent teachers to enhance education standards in government schools.

TikTok will soon be available for download in India. That’s because the Madras High Court has lifted the ban on the Chinese video-sharing app for encouraging pornography, subject to the company fulfilling some conditions. TikTok’s owner Bytedance promised it will rein it obscene content through a combination of artificial intelligence and manual efforts, including steps such as shutting the app automatically if it senses an objectionable upload. Earlier, the social media firm said in a court filing that the ban was costing it financial losses of up to $500,000 every day.

The Banking Ombudsman got nearly 47,000 customer complaints against State Bank of India in the year through June 2018, the highest among all banks, RBI data shows. HDFC Bank topped the list among private lenders with over 12,000 complaints. To be sure, the two banks are the country’s largest in terms of customer base. Overall, complaints against banks rose by nearly 25% to 1.64 lakh. The top grievances? Non-observance of fair practices, debit/credit card issues, and digital banking. An earlier RBI report said most customer complaints were coming from urban areas due to growing awareness and banks’ poor redressal mechanisms.

Amit Jain, Uber’s head of Asia Pacific, is moving on. Jain will leave the company by May-end following which Uber’s EMEA head Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty will get the additional charge of the APAC business. Uber is also restructuring the India business, where it has 30 million cars, and aligning it with its Europe operations. An alumnus of IIT Delhi and Stanford University, Jain had joined Uber India as the country head in 2015 before getting elevated to his present role last year.

Flipkart is looking to invest ?5,000 crore for setting up logistics parks in Gurugram, Karnataka and West Bengal, Business Standard reports, citing unidentified sources. The Walmart-owned company is in the process of acquiring 300 acres of land for the initiative, which will help reduce its logistics cost and speed up deliveries, besides generating 50,000 direct and indirect jobs. But the plan could meet with internal resistance: Business Line reports that Walmart is probing if Flipkart paid kickbacks to government officials for setting up fulfilment centres.

Idea of the Day: It’s OK to talk about yourself at work, but make sure you listen to others as well, says author Julie Zhuo.

“You have to believe that other people’s stories are as interesting and important as your own, and that talking about yourself is a way to find common ground with another person."
